Joanne

Joanne is alternatives hair salon owner and had been working on the Hibiscus Coast for 15 years before buying alternatives in late 2012.

She has over 3 decades of hairdressing experience and is classically trained in precision cutting, very experienced with curly hair & loves freehand colouring  & corrective hair colour work.

Jo was a NZ finalist in the “Men’s Cut Colour, Style” section of the 2007 Australasian Goldwell Color Zoom Trophy & is also one of alternatives Make Up artists.

Jo & her hubby, a local firefighter, have three kids, she attends Orewa Baptist Church and thinks the Hibiscus Coast is an awesome place to live and a great place to have a hair salon.

What are your fave hair products at the moment?
“I’m loving R+Co’s Badlands. A Dry Texturising Paste, which gives an amazing dry texture to short funky hair styles”.

What trends  are inspiring you?
“This is not really a trend, but I am loving tape hair extensions. Extensions can add fullness or length to a clients hair, that is cost effective & very low maintanence.”.

Why do you like working @ alternatives?
“I feel blessed to have an amazing team of skilled, talented hairdressers to work with. They are like my sisters and our clients are beautiful people, wonderful.”

Zoe

Zoe is a very creative and driven senior stylist & she has a wonderful knack of ensuring her clients feel both cared for and really important.

Zoe is very good at blonding work and complex Blow Wave styling, leaving her clients feeling thrilled and looking amazing.

In 2016 Zoe was the runner up in the “NZ Weddings Magazine” bridal stylist of the year.

Zoe is currently on maternity leave until 2018

What are your fave products at the moment?
“I’m loving O&M’s Atonic spray because it gives lightweight volume & body to hairstyles and you can really see the difference & I also love the Pastel Colours by JUUCE, for an instant spray on pop of colour..”

What trends are inspiring you at the moment?
“I love the current trend of  pastel peek-a-boo colour techniques”

Why do you like working @ alternatives?
“The girls are like a second family and I think the Silverdale hair salon has an enjoyable atmosphere and has a great progressive learning environment. Jo is pretty awesome too”.

Brooke

Brooke is our youngest Senior Stylist, qualifying in 2017.  She is particularly skilled at multi tonal colouring and her foiling work is beautiful.

Brooke is a very caring young woman who enjoys all aspects of hairdressing. Her clients repeatedly tell us how much they love her gentle, attentive nature – Brooke will instantly make you feel calm & relaxed!.

Brooke lives with her friends and enjoys hanging out with her boyfriend at the weekends.

What are your fave products at the moment?
“I am really enjoying using Oi Oil by Davines, because I like the shine & softness it gives the hair & it has an amazing smell!”

What trends are inspiring you at the moment?
” I like at the moment using coloured conditioners on highlighted hair, giving customisable colours.”

”The best thing about working here is learning new skills every day and I love working with our team.”

Brylee

Brylee is alternatives intermediate apprentice and is excited about learning all aspects of the industry.

She is very friendly and welcoming and her clients like her attention to detail and she makes them feel and look amazing! Brylee is already showing a natural strong talent in cutting & foiling work and she is also one of alternatives Make Up Artists.

Brylee loves to take care of herself, she works out at the gym & enjoys spending time with her friends in the weekend.

What are your fave hair products at the moment?
“I don’t have a specific fav at me moment, but I love to customise together a cocktail of products to suit my clients hair at the time”

What trends  are inspiring you?
“I’m getting into blonding work & ombres”

Jade is alternatives junior apprentice and has jumped right in & is loving learning about our craft.  She is very through and will give you an indulgent, relaxing head massage. She enjoys styling work & shows her skills in gorgeous waves & curling work.

She is confident and friendly and has a passion for hairdressing that will keep her in good stead starting her career.

Jade lives on the Hibiscus Coast  with her family.

What are your fave hair products at the moment?
“I’m loving JOICO’s  Ironclad. An aerosol heat protector to avoid any damage when using hair straighteners. A must have when ironing in this humid weather”.

What trends  are inspiring you?
“The current hair trend I am enjoying is customising mixed tone colouring and working with long hair.”

alternatives hair is a member of NZARH and HITO and is also a Joico registered salon. We also stock fifteen different boutique shampoo brands in our shop at front of house.

We are a progressive salon and we believe in looking after the next generation of hairdressers. We take our responsibility to the hairdressing industry seriously and fully support and encourage hairdressing apprenticeship training programmes.

We recognise that good apprentices add value not just to our business, but are integral to the future of the  hairdressing industry. Because of this, we employ and train up apprentices and accept Gateway students.

We work to keep our hairdressing team motivated and excited by attending shows, entering hairdressing competitions, attending seminars and holding regular in-salon, hands-on training.

We recognise that as a company you can all have the best policies, procedures and practices, but without a great team of people learning and working in harmony with each other none of those matter.
